                                                                                                                                                                                               Unity Candle

You can have each of the Mother's light the two outside tapers as part of the processional.

Verbiage:

Today you have decided to share the rest of your lives with each other.
This beautiful union is now symbolized by the lighting of the Unity Candle.
The candle you are about to light is a candle of Marriage.
The individual candles represent all that you are and all that you have been until this moment
It is a candle of Unity because both candles must come together to create the new light.
Its fire is miraculous because it represents the light of two people in love.
This candle is also a candle of Commitment because it takes two people working together to keep it ablaze.
Love is like a flame; it has the heat of passion, it is constantly changing, its radiance is there for all to see and together you must protect it from being extinguished.
BRIDE and GROOM please light the center candle to symbolize the union of your lives.

and/or

(Groom) and (Bride), the two separate candles symbolize your separate lives, separate families and separate sets of friends.  I ask that each of you take one of the lit candles and that together you light the center candle.

The individual candles represent your lives before today.  Lighting the center candle represents that your two lives are now joined to one light and represents the joining together of your two familes and sets of friends to one.

Another Sample

(GROOM) and (BRIDE) have chosen to affirm their love by the lighting of a Unity Candle.  They have also asked their families to participate in the lighting ceremony.  In so doing, they signal their desire to not only join as one in their union, but to unite two families together as one.  (This is where you can invite the Mother's up to light the two small outside candles)

I want to take a moment to explain what the lighting of these candles represents to them:

From every human being there rises a light.  And when two souls that are destined for each other find one another, their streams of light flow together and a single brighter light goes forth from their united being.

(GROOM) and (BRIDE), the brightness of the candles that your families have lit and the brightness of the Unity Candle that you will together light, will shine throughout your lives, giving you courage in darkness and reassurance in the light.  May the candle's warmth give you shelter from the cold and may its energy fill your spirits with strength and joy.

As you light the Unity Candle, I want to ask you and all your friends and family that are present today, to see the brightness of the flame as a symbol of the brightness that your own life brings to this new family.  As you lift your candles to light your family Unity Candle together, so may your love for each other, light up your lives as a family.

Your mother's have each lit a candle for each of your families.   (GROOM) and (BRIDE), please use those candles to light your Unity Candle together."

and/or

Together, (Groom) and (Bride) will light one candle from two smaller candles as they acknowlege their union as husband and wife. By allowing the flame of the two smaller candles to remain lit, they also accept the individuality of each other as a means to fulfilling their oneness."

Mention of Mother's and Father's ,

Mr. And Mrs. ______________ have loved and cared for their daughter in a multitude of ways. Likewise, Mr. and Mrs. __________ have loved and cared for their son. We all here express gratitude for the inspiration of your love, that has enabled you to bring forth your children for us all to know and enjoy. As you have held them close, fitting them for maturity, will you now willingly and freely release them to love and care for each other? And will you support and encourage their life together that it, too, may be a blessing for generations to come?

Bride and Groom Mothers will now light the outside tapers of their Unity Candle. These tapers signify their child’s single and separate lives. (Please be seated) or the outside tapers can be lit before bridal party comes out.

Bride and Groom , Mr. and Mrs., Mr. and Ms., beloved friends:

We are gathered here in the presence of God and of this company to join in holy marriage Bride and Groom and to bear witness to the transforming power of love.

Love is a quality of spirit and an attitude of the emotions, but marriage is a life’s work, a spiritual art form! Therefore, this is an occasion of both profound joy and great responsibility, and we who partake in it, bind ourselves as witnesses to the labor of love that Bride and Groom are undertaking here. In acknowledgment of this holy purpose and the power of this occasion, let us pray: (this prayer can be omitted, if desired)

Eternal God, creator and preserver of all life, author of salvation, giver of all grace; Bless and sanctify with your Holy Spirit Bride and Groom , who come now to join in marriage. Grant that they may give their vows to each other in the strength of your steadfast love. Enable them to grow in love and peace with you and with one another all their days, that may reach out in concern and service to the world through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
